Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMs) provide the benefits of traditional anabolic androgenic steroids such as testosterone (including increased muscle mass, fat loss, and bone density), while showing a lower tendency to produce unwanted side effects.
What are SARMs
SARMS contain androgens. Androgens are a special kind of hormones that act as ligands (a molecule linked to another molecule) that connect to cellular androgen receptors.
The Androgen Receptor plays a critical role in the development and function of primary and accessory sexual organs, skeletal muscle, and bone, as well as several other organs. When Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators bind to the receptor, they demonstrate anabolic (hypertrophic) activity in both muscle and bone. In theory, they bind to the receptor and place it in a conformation that is significantly different than typical androgen receptors stimulators (such as steroids), and therefore are able to alter the gene-transcription process in a manner that is tissue specific.
It is this specificity that makes these receptor modulators able to selectively cause muscle growth, while reducing or eliminating unwanted secondary effects.
Unlike testosterone cypionate, SARMs is more than 200 times more powerful in muscle stimulation and 80 times more selective for muscle.
How do SARMs work?
As we age, our endurance, power and skeletal muscle mass deteriorates due to the loss of type 2 muscle fibers. With SARMS, skeletal muscle mass and strength in androgen-deficient people can be enhanced.
There are 2 types of administering SARMs – orally or in injectable dosages. The anabolic effect is expected to be the same as testosterone. Moreover, it’s also said to produce dose-dependent improvements in bone mineral density and motorized strength apart from the ability to decrease body fat and increase lean body mass.
SARM’s are not well studied at the doses usually taken by bodybuilders. Most studies are in elderly people and they take 1/10th the amount that a typical bodybuilder would take. Unfortunately, that means that the side effects are not well understood either…

Unlike anabolic steroids, SARMs generally produce fewer unwanted side effects on non-target tissues such as the prostate, hairline, sebaceous glands, and secondary sexual organs. Some SARMs have even been developed specifically for the treatment of those kinds of side effects (i.e. for benign prostate hypertrophy).
